How to Raise Funds in Humanitarian Emergencies

Responding to a Crisis

Responding to a Crisis

Disasters can happen anywhere at any time. In developing countries, in particular, the resources to respond immediately and meet the level of need are often lacking. Being prepared and knowing how to raise funds in a humanitarian crisis is crucial to be able to act quickly and save lives.

A humanitarian disaster can be an earthquake, flooding, famine, or a war – anything that throws life in off balance and leaves people unable to help themselves. Especially when a disaster is profound and widespread, and receives international attention, the willingness to help is high – but to actually benefit from this to help save lives, you must be prepared, and learn how to effectively respond well in advance of an actual crisis. Just as there are many different categories of humanitarian emergencies, there are unique channels of funding for each context, and specific funds set up to respond to those cries. Many of these funds require early registration and should be examined in advance, rather than after a crisis arises.

We put together this course to share these insights with you, and to ensure you and your organization are prepared to respond immediately in a humanitarian crisis. It is a comprehensive introduction to this specific type of fundraising for professionals working on emergency and crisis related issues or in high risk environments. We will cover everything from an introduction to the landscape of humanitarian emergency funding to funding applications, and crucially, how to prepare ahead of time for these emergencies – as there is seldom time to properly write proposals once a disaster hits.

What will you learn from this course?

  • The landscape of humanitarian emergency funding
  • Types of humanitarian emergencies
  • Finding funding in a crisis
  • Emergency funds to apply to

If you are working in an at-risk country, this course is super important for you to make sure you will be able to play an important role in reaction to a potential disaster. An at-risk country can be any country, as the latest huge-scale disasters after hurricanes in the USA have shown. Furthermore, disasters are not always rapid – they can be slow on setting as well but require the same mechanisms to receive funding.
